Biography

Lawrence Ogbonnia Ettu is currently a Professor of Civil Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). Born on October 10, 1960, he commenced secondary education in Nigeria at Madonna High School, Ihitte (1976-1980) and finished with a Distinction at Government Secondary School, Afikpo (1980-1981). He holds a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering with First Class Hons from Unife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU (1986); an M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Unilag (1990); PGD in Computer Science from OAU (1992); and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Structures) from FUTO (2013). He is also a member of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (1992) and a COREN-registered Engineer (1992).

Rev. Engr. Prof. L. O. Ettu started his academic career as a Graduate Assistant at OAU in 1989, where he rose to the rank of Lecturer II in 1992 and later joined the services of FUTO still as Lecturer II in 1994. He was promoted to the ranks of Lecturer I in 1997, Senior Lecturer in 2013, Reader in 2016, and Professor in 2019.

Besides teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students of Civil Engineering, Rev. Engr. Prof. L. O. Ettu has served in different capacities in university administration, community development, and Civil Engineering consultancy from 1986 till date. He successfully served as Class Adviser to two sets of Civil Engineering students, the 1995-2000 and 2000-2005 sets; Chairman of Laboratory Committee and Final Year Project Coordinator for a number of years; and Head of Department of Civil Engineering, 2020-2022.  He has authored/co-authored four standard university textbooks in Civil Engineering and has published over sixty papers in reputable journals.

Rev. Engr. Prof. L. O. Ettu is also an ordained Minister of the Gospel (1998) and holds a Doctorate in Christian Apologetics from Southern Evangelical Seminary, Charlotte, USA (2010). He is happily married to Dr. Mrs. T. U. Ettu, the current Director of Owerri Study Center of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and has four children and three grandchildren (As at April 2022).
