FUTO Sports Unit



The Sports Unit functions under the Student Affairs Unit, with mission to promote physical activity, human movement, sports, and leisure to improve the health, well-being, and quality of life of students, and staff of the University. The Unit oversees and maintains all recreational facilities on campus, to keep them in proper conditions for usage.
The Unit provides opportunities for students and staff to participate in a variety of competitive and recreational activities and games. Particularly, the unit plays the leading role in coordinating all intra and inter university competitions and championships involving FUTO students and staff. Intra university competitions include the Vice Chancellors Cup, inter hostel games, while inter university competitions are the Nigerian University Games (NUGA), West African University Games (WAUG), Imo State Governor’s Cup, etc. The Sports Unit ensures preparedness for all competitions and liaises with the Dean of the Student Affairs Unit, to obtain necessary approvals and sponsorship from the University Management.
The current Director of Sports is Dr. Mrs. P.N. Anyanwu



FUTO students have recorded impressive achievements in sports:
- The male football team won the 2023 edition of the Imo State Governor’s cup.
- Elizabeth Anyanacho represented Nigeria at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the Taekwondo female -67kg category. Before then, Elizabeth won bronze medal at the 2019 African Games in Morocco. Elizabeth has won Back to back since 2008 to date, the National championship in 67kg category. She is currently on training tour in Germany in preparation for 2024 Olympic games in France.
- Chika Chukwumerije won bronze medal in the +80 kg category at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Before then, he won a gold medal at the 2007 All-Africa Games.
- FUTO students won the inaugural Kanu Nwankwo 6-a-side competition in 2017.
- The FUTO volleyball teams emerged runners up in 2023 Imo State Governors cup for All Tertiary Institutions in Imo State.
- In December 2023, our best female sprinter, Chidinma Agu, won a scholarship to Study and run in the USA.
- FUTO currently holds the National champions in Scrabble and Under 18/Junior Chess Champions. They’re Masters Princes Charles and Oliver Tenison, with their Teams.
