Biography

COSMAS ONYEKACHI UJOWUNDU holds a Ph.D in Environmental Biochemistry/Toxicology and a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Journalism. I have Professional Certification on pest, rodent control and fumigation, Certification on Health safety and environment (HSE) Competence Development Training (level 3), Certification on HSE (Level 1-2), Certification on Environmental and Social Standards (World Bank accredited). I belong to the following professional bodies; Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB), West African Society of Toxicology (WASOT), Nigeria Environmental Society (NES), Environmental Health Scientists Association, Nigeria (EHSAN) and Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON).

I have a well-expressed personal vision on teaching and research with over 18 years’ experience. Supervised over 100 B.Tech./B.Sc. theses, and over 20 postgraduate (PGD, M.Sc., Ph.D.) theses; Co-authored 2 Biochemistry textbooks on laboratory methods and techniques; I have over 100 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.

I am a facilitator in CE-sPESS FUTO and I teach the following courses; Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Labour, Working Conditions, Management and Productivity. In the Department of Biochemistry, I teach the following courses: Industrial Pollution and waste Management Technology, Environmental toxicology, Environmental Pollution and Waste Management, Xenobiotics and Forensic Biochemistry, Biochemical Toxicology, Industrial Biochemistry, Food and Nutritional Biochemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I have the capacity to develop and teach in a variety of contexts, including in person, online and remote delivery as the situation may require.

I am interested in the use of nature to remedy environmental challenges induced by anthropogenic activities of man. My interest is to exploits the biochemical similarities and differences conferred by the genetic makeup of organisms to achieve this. Currently, I measure contaminants in the environment, wildlife, fish and food samples with a view to examining the biomagnification, biotransformation, and toxicological effects of priority pollutants in these environmental samples. My research interests include the Bioremediation and phytoremediation polluted environment, analyses of pesticides, polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAH) and heavy metals as contaminants in foods and environmental matrices.

I am Professional Environmental Manager/consultant with over 10 years of expertise in private settings. I am able to work independently and use in-house resources effectively, such as problem resolution procedures. I have proven ability to manage multiple projects while meeting challenging deadlines.
